What Happened to the Pro Bowl?
The NFL had held an all-star game in some form since its first one in January 1939, with no game only in 2021 because of the pandemic. In 2023 the tackle game was replaced by the Pro Bowl Games, a week of skills events ending in a flag football game, and in February 2026 the event moved into Super Bowl week in San Francisco. In August 2026 the league ended the games altogether.
The title stays. Being named a Pro Bowler still counts on a player's record and in many contracts, and the change is meant to make it rarer: 88 players a year, no replacement selections when someone is injured or plays in the Super Bowl, and a celebration instead of a game.
